We know the word "race" can conjure up many different images (and questions!) depending on your experience and background, so let's talk specifically about NICA racing. The Missouri league has a great primer on their site, and we encourage you to jump over there and read that now.
NICA races are truly special and unique. Sure, they are timed on a close course and there are start lines and finish lines and lots of cheering supporters, but the emphasis is not on winning, but on fun, camaraderie, community, and conquering personal goals. Races are catered specifically for young racers, and athletes race within their age group and experience level on NICA-approved courses that are similar to the trails they ride at weekly team practices.
Every racer can choose for themselves what they want to achieve on race day. Perhaps it's getting on the podium or setting a personal best time, but just as frequently, athletes race for the joy of riding and personal growth. Whatever it is, it's up to them. Coaches and league staff are there to support every athlete in meeting their goals, and teammates and families bring the stoke.
