We participate in the Missouri Interscholastic League and National Interscholastic League (NICA).
South City Composite is open to all students in grades 6-12 in the city of St. Louis. We are called a "composite" team because we welcome athletes from across the city no matter their school, including St. Louis public schools, charter schools, private schools, and home schoolers. We also have two high school teams -- Metro Panthers and Collegiate Owls -- under our umbrella.
There are no tryouts, cuts, or sitting on the bench - everyone rides. Absolutely no experience necessary! In fact, 74% of NICA coaches and athletes have never ridden a mountain bike before joining NICA! Our experienced coaches teach student-athletes everything they need to know to ride and race. Everyone gets to ride and participate in all events and practices. No one is required to race. If you don't want to race, you can still attend race events to pre-ride the course with your team, hang out in the team tent, and spend time with teams across the league.
The NICA season runs from July 1-October 31. We have some pre-season events April-June to prepare for the upcoming season. We have three practices per week:
Thursday evening - skills, conditioning, and team building in a local city park, such as Francis, Forest Park, or Carondelet.
Saturday morning - trail ride at an area mountain bike trail in St. Louis County, St. Charles County, or Metro East.
Tuesday evening - optional trail ride at Cliff Cave in south St. Louis County.
There are 5 races throughout the state from late August -October. Racing is not required to join the team!
Mountain biking is fun, and when you ride with a team, riding and training is even more fun! We focus on fostering a life-long love of mountain biking and the outdoors, improving skills, and increasing fitness so that each student-athlete can meet their goals. Athletes are not required to race to participate! You will receive the same valuable coaching and technical instruction whether you race or not. We set both individual and team goals and work collaboratively to attain these goals. These goals range from having a good time riding with friends, learning skills to ride on technical terrain, or competing at races. And our main goals are always to have fun and stay safe!
Our team strives to embody and promote the core NICA values; they are at the heart of all we do!
